It works with every supported platform, including YouTube, where video downloads are switched off but the thumbnail can be saved. It is handy for creators who want their own covers back, for presentations and notes about a video, and for building link previews.
What you get
- Thumbnails from YouTube videos and Shorts, up to 1280×720 when available
- Cover images of TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, Reddit, Pinterest, Vimeo, Dailymotion and Twitch videos
- Preview images of Pexels and Pixabay items
- Several sizes, when the platform publishes more than one
How to use it
Step 1: Copy the link
Open the video or post in its app or website, tap Share and choose Copy link.
Step 2: Paste it here
Paste the link into the box on this page and press Get Thumbnail.
Step 3: Pick a size
When the platform provides several sizes, choose the one you need.
Step 4: Download
Press Download to save the image, then open it from your downloads or Files app.
What resolution to expect
The resolution depends entirely on what the platform stores:
- YouTube: up to 1280×720 for most recent videos; some older or low-resolution uploads only have 640×480 or 480×360.
- Vimeo, Dailymotion and Twitch: usually large widescreen images.
- TikTok and Instagram: vertical cover images, usually similar in size to the video.
- X, Reddit, Facebook and Pinterest: the preview image the platform shows for the video or pin.
Image formats
Thumbnails are saved in the format the platform uses, usually JPG and sometimes WebP or PNG. Every current browser, phone and image editor opens these formats. If an older program does not accept a WebP file, open it in a browser or a photo app and save or export it as JPG.
Common problems and fixes
If no thumbnail is offered or the image is not what you expected, check these points:
- The image is small: the platform does not store a larger version for that video. SavyClip never enlarges images artificially.
- The cover is not the one you remember: the creator may have changed it, and the platform now serves the new cover.
- "This post is private" or "We couldn't find this post": the video is no longer public or was removed.
- Live stream links are not supported; use the link of the recording or a clip once the stream has ended.
Thumbnails are creative work
Creators often spend as much effort on a thumbnail as on the video itself, and the image is protected by copyright like the video. Saving your own thumbnails, or using a thumbnail as a preview that links to the original video, is common. Reusing someone else's thumbnail in your own videos, designs or products needs their permission.
Limitations
- The largest size available is the one the platform provides; images are never upscaled.
- Live streams, private posts and deleted videos are not supported.
- Playlists, channels and profile pages are not supported; use the link of a single video.
Questions and answers
Can I download YouTube thumbnails even though video downloads are off?
Yes. Thumbnails are available for YouTube videos and Shorts in the highest resolution YouTube provides for them.
Why is my thumbnail only 480×360?
The platform does not have a larger version of that image. This is common for older YouTube videos and videos uploaded in low resolution.
Can I get the thumbnail of a TikTok or Instagram reel?
Yes. Paste the link of the post and you get its cover image, usually in the vertical size of the video.
May I use a thumbnail on my website?
Use thumbnails of your own videos freely. For other people's thumbnails, a preview that links to the original video is common, but any other use needs the creator's permission.
